Digital product compatibility depends on the file format, device, operating system, software version, account level, and intended workflow. This Temply Studio guide explains common formats used for digital planners, printables, SVG bundles, Canva templates, and spreadsheet tools. The individual product description always takes priority because not every product includes every file type or feature.
Compatibility Checklist Before Purchase
Before buying a digital product, confirm the following:
- Your device can download and store the file.
- Your software can open or import the exact file extension listed.
- Your app supports important features such as PDF hyperlinks, transparency, formulas, or vector paths.
- The product's dimensions, orientation, and page size fit your project.
- You understand whether the product is editable, annotatable, printable, or supplied as a finished design.
- You have any required third-party account or subscription.
When a listing names a compatible app or platform, that reference describes intended use and does not imply affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement by the third-party owner.
PDF Compatibility
PDF is one of the most common formats for digital planners, printables, worksheets, journals, and instructions. Most modern computers, phones, and tablets can display a PDF, but viewing, annotation, editing, printing, and hyperlink behavior are different functions.
Printable PDFs
Printable PDF files are designed to preserve layout across devices. Confirm the listed size—such as US Letter, A4, or A5—and check print preview. Printer margins, scaling, paper, ink, and color settings can change the result. Use one test page before committing to a full planner or workbook.
Digital planner and annotation PDFs
A digital planner PDF may be imported into a compatible annotation app such as Goodnotes or Notability when the listing indicates that use. Temply Studio does not include the app, subscription, tablet, stylus, cloud storage, or device support.
A PDF can be annotatable without being editable. Annotation may allow handwriting, highlights, text boxes, and stickers, while the underlying page design remains fixed.
Hyperlinked PDFs
Hyperlinks work only when both the product and the app support them. Some apps require navigation or read mode before a link can be tapped. Converting, flattening, splitting, or re-exporting a PDF can remove or alter links.
SVG Compatibility
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. Vector paths can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images, making SVG popular for cutting machines, decals, signs, shirts, cards, and design projects.
SVG compatibility depends on the software edition and device. Cricut Design Space commonly supports SVG import. Silhouette Studio may require a paid software edition for SVG import, depending on the current version and account. Other vector applications can handle SVG differently.
A blank thumbnail does not always mean an SVG file is empty. Basic phone galleries and preview apps often fail to render SVG correctly. Import it into compatible vector or cutting software before reporting a missing design.
PNG Compatibility
PNG is a raster image format. It is widely supported by design, presentation, sublimation, and image-editing applications. A PNG may include a transparent background, but transparency must be confirmed on the product page.
Unlike SVG, PNG quality depends on pixel dimensions and resolution. Enlarging a small PNG can create blur or jagged edges. Check the stated dimensions or resolution when the project requires a specific print size.
DXF Compatibility
DXF is an exchange format used by some cutting, CAD, and vector workflows. It can be useful when SVG import is unavailable, but layers, line grouping, and scale may be interpreted differently across applications. Use DXF only when your software supports it and the product includes it.
EPS Compatibility
EPS is a professional vector format commonly opened in Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW, and other compatible vector applications. Basic photo viewers and office applications might not open EPS. EPS files can require proper import or conversion through vector software.
Canva Template Compatibility
Only products explicitly labeled as Canva templates include Canva editing access. A Canva account and internet connection are normally required. Depending on the template, some elements, fonts, stock assets, export options, or features may require Canva Pro or another paid entitlement.
When opening a template link:
- Sign in to the Canva account you intend to use.
- Create your own copy instead of editing a shared master.
- Check for unavailable or paid elements before completing extensive edits.
- Export a test page to confirm fonts, spacing, image quality, and links.
Canva changes its interface and feature availability over time. Temply Studio cannot control third-party service availability or account rules.
Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets Compatibility
Spreadsheet templates may contain formulas, formatting, charts, tabs, data validation, conditional formatting, and print settings. Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets do not always interpret these features identically.
For Microsoft Excel files
Use a supported desktop or web version of Excel when the product is listed for Excel. Mobile versions may provide limited editing or formula support.
For Google Sheets
Upload or import the file only when the listing states Google Sheets compatibility or when you accept that conversion can change formatting and calculations. Keep the original file as a backup.
Important spreadsheet precautions
- Do not overwrite formula cells unless instructions permit it.
- Check date, decimal, and currency settings for your locale.
- Review formulas after conversion between platforms.
- Use a duplicate file for experimentation.
ZIP Folder Compatibility
ZIP is a compressed container used to deliver multiple files. It must be extracted before the contents can be used reliably. Modern Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and many Android devices include extraction tools, but device storage and permissions can affect the process.
Fonts and Linked Assets
Fonts, mockups, photos, or decorative preview elements are included only when the listing explicitly says so. Editable files can display substitute fonts when the original font is unavailable. Third-party fonts and assets can have separate licenses.
Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile Considerations
Desktop or laptop computers
Computers generally offer the most reliable workflow for extracting large ZIP files, organizing folders, installing fonts, editing vector graphics, and checking spreadsheet formulas.
Tablets
Tablets are popular for digital planning and annotation. Available storage, cloud synchronization, app version, and stylus settings can affect performance.
Phones
Phones can access many downloads but may provide limited previews and file management. A phone preview should not be used as the only compatibility test for SVG, EPS, large PDF, or spreadsheet files.
Compatibility Is Not the Same as Editability
A file can open in an application without allowing full design edits. For example, a PDF reader can display a planner, and an annotation app can add handwriting, but neither necessarily provides access to the original layout. Full editability requires a source format and software that supports it.
